  • U-TURN Think Again.  Did you know that of the 16 to 20 year olds who die in car crashes, 1 in 4 are drunk?  It's time for a change and the PA DUI Association needs your help. They would like to introduce you to the U-TURN Campaign.  The U-TURN campaign challenges you to "Think Again" about alcohol use and underage drinking and driving.  But U-TURN is different.  It doesn't use scare tactics and it doesn't preach about the problem.  Instead, it speaks to you in your world, your way and in your words.  Help eliminate life-changing and often deadly behaviors.  Be empowered.  Get your facts straight.  Get involved.  Change the way you think by pulling a youee.  Pull a what?  PULL-A-YOU-EE.  Think alcohol use and underage drunk driving doesn't put you and your friends in any danger?  Think again.  Visit www.pullayouee.com to find out more.
  • Is volunteering something you may want to do?  Excela Health Home Care and Hospice has opportunities for men and women to use their time and talent to volunteer help for others.  Hospice volunteering is a unique way of giving to others at a critical time in their lives.  You can do it.  Our free training will help you learn and further develop your giving qualities.  The patients and family member in your area or our Inpatient Unit are waiting for you.  A few hours a week to sit with a patient, provide support to a family or other non patient related services are just a few things you will be able to do.  You are needed.  Please call Joan Roth, Coordinator, Volunteer Services at hospice.  724-689-1653
  • Applications are currently being accepted for two of the former Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools, the PA School for Global Entrepreneurship at Lehigh University and the University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy.  Applications for both programs are due by the 2nd week of February, 2010.

The newly named PA School for Global Entrepreneurship (PGSE) will be offered June 27 through July 31, 2010, and is the same in content, length and selectivity as the former Governor’s School program.  Last year, 63 Pennsylvania students and 13 international students participated in the 2009 PSGE program. PSGE students will attend sessions on topics pertaining to entrepreneurship, global networking, team building, project management, leadership and working in a culturally diverse environment.  All students will attend core courses, as well as have the option to select elective courses each week.  Entrepreneurial exchanges with leaders from business, industry, government, education and the non-profit community will be a part of each weekly schedule, as will entrepreneurial excursions to local sites of interest including field trips to New York City, Philadelphia and Harrisburg.

Working in teams according to skill and interest areas, students are assigned to a real-world company where they will spend one day per week on a project and problem-solving for that organization. Students prepare a formal marketing or business plan and presentation for the company executives.

The University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy is four weeks in length (June 27- July 24, 2010), but has also maintained the same content and selectivity as the former Governor’s School.   The program accepts 110 high school juniors who are introduced to the world of health care.  The curriculum exposes students to the wide range of careers in scientific research, mental health, public health, social work, primary care, and rehabilitation, to name a few.  Twice during the program, participants are randomly matched with practicing health care professionals for a job shadow experience.

Held in the summer, both programs are residential, with students living in college dormitories on the university campuses.  Program fees include all housing, meals, tuition, course materials, and field trips.
